About Us

We believe that all children have a right to play!

We provide an environment full of choices and experiences for any young child to find their way and thrive.

Welcome!

Little Neighbours Preschool engages students in our “Learning Through Play” program. In fact, play is so important in a child’s development that its significance is recognized by the United Nations as a specific right to all children:

“ALL CHILDREN HAVE A RIGHT TO PLAY!”

Our Story

Little Neighbours Preschool is a non-profit society that has been in operation since 1968. We were originally called the Coquitlam Preschool Society. We started out in a classroom leased from Cape Horn Elementary and in 1976 we moved to our current location in a portable classroom next to the school. Today when you come by, you’ll find handprints of many of our “graduates” decorating the outside of our building.

Philosophy & Mission

We believe that all children have a right to play!

Our mission is to provide an environment full of choices and experiences for any young child to find their way and thrive. Children learn best, not by being told, but by constructing the knowledge for themselves through interaction with other children while playing.

Helping Your Child Explore, Grow, & Learn

Helping Your Child Explore, Grow, & Learn

Each child will be given the opportunity to explore and:

  • Try new things
  • Make their own choices
  • Problem solve
  • Imitate
  • Use “Their” words
  • Self-initiate
  • Test boundaries

All in an open environment!

Our Teachers

Mimi Folkestad

Mimi is our preschool teacher and she has had a long history with Little Neighbours Preschool. Mimi started out as a parent in the preschool when her two sons attended. After obtaining her ECE certification, she came back as a substitute teacher and worked as a teaching assistant at one point. In 2008 she was hired as our teacher. We are thrilled to have such a qualified and enthusiastic teacher for our school who knows what makes Little Neighbours Preschool such a special place for both preschoolers and their families.

Vicky Heng

Vicky is an Early Childhood Assistant and she was first involved with the preschool as a parent while her own kids attended. Vicky then became employed with the preschool as a 1 on 1 support worker for many years. She now assists our teacher in the running of the classroom.
